Tri 1-Rounds 1 Through 9/InfoPairs Science

Every other week, a topic will be introduced in small group for approximately 20 minutes per a session. There are three sessions per a topic. Sessions one and two have different cards to read and analyze.  On the third session, students will have the opportunity to "Show What they Know" between the two cards. They are interactive, engaging, and best of all...non-fiction. They cross the curriculum to teach other subjects such as science/social studies. The first section is how the program is set up, followed by the rounds per trimester.

Sessions One and Two
1. Introduce the Text (5 minutes)
2. Reading the Text (5 to 10 minutes)
3. Discussing the Text (5 to 10 minutes)

Session Three
1. Reflecting (5 minutes)
2. Cross Text Analysis (5 to 10 minutes)
3. Reflecting followed by a "Show What you Know" evaluation (5 minutes)

Trimester One

Round One

1A How to Make Scrambled Eggs
Focus: To help students stop, reread, and use all sources of information (meaning, syntax, words) to regain meaning when reading doesn't make sense.
1B Sound Waves: How Dolphins Echolocate
Focus: To help students interpret more complex charts and diagrams to draw personal conclusions.
Session 3- Focus: To help students isolate relevant knowledge from other texts and link with specific information in text to construct deeper understanding of texts.

Round Three

2A Sam's Hockey Time Line
Focus: To help students use sequence to construct meaning and deepen understanding.
2B Technology for Senior Citizens
Focus: To help students articulate personal conclusions and compare and contrast them with the author's message to determine their own and/or the author's point of view.
Session 3- Focus: To help students use past experience and prior knowledge to compare and contrast information.

Round Five

3A Let's Look at Density
Focus: To help students use text features, such as title, contents, or headings, to predict, construct meaning, and read for specific purposes.
3B Be a Density Detective
Focus: To help students use sections of text to explain and justify inferences.
Session 3- Focus: To help students link information gained from more than one text to generate new understandings.

Round Seven

4A An Iguana Goes to the Vet
Focus: To help students use knowledge of how the world works, illustrations, and text to draw personal conclusions.
4B Jerome's Dog-Walking Business
Focus: To help students identify the author's message, purpose, or bias.
Session 3- Focus: To help students isolate relevant knowledge from other texts and link with specific message/info from text to construct deeper understanding of text.

Round Nine

5A The River Otter's Home
Focus: To help students isolate relevant images from personal experiences or knowledge that link to descriptive language in text to deepen understanding of complex concepts.
5B The Spotted Owl's Forest
Focus: To help students formulate a personal response to the author's message, purpose, or bias based on prior knowledge or personal experience.
Session 3- Focus: To help students isolate relevant knowledge from other texts and link to specific message/info from text to construct deeper understanding of text.
